KDHX CUTS AN IMPORTANT NEWS SOURCE

According to an informal community survey conducted by KDHX members this September, listeners and members of KDHX overwhelmingly favor bringing the award winning Democracy Now! back to its full hour broadcast five days a week on the radio station.

This response follows the decision by KDHX management to cut Democracy Now! airtime to a mere ten minute headlines broadcast Monday through Friday back in August (reported back on August 8 on the STL IMC newswire).

Many responding to the survey complained about cutting the news show 's broadcast time: "You can't get the full story on the world in just one hour, let alone 10 minutes," one person responded.

The Enclosed Public: Protest and Premonitions at the Vice-Presidential Debate in St. Louis

A record television audience of almost 70 million people viewed the vice-presidential debate last Thursday night at Washington University's Athletic Complex in St. Louis. But nearly a mile out of view of the complex lay an example of what corporations, the media, and the state have together tried to quell in increasingly forceful ways: public dissent.

Over one hundred workers, activists, students, veterans and families gathered in Northmoor park near campus to voice alternatives to the candidates' discussion of abstract policy issues. Activist groups Instead of War, Code Pink, and Veterans for Peace organized the protest to highlight the narrow scope of the debate, and to expose the carefully mediated lack of public access to discussions of public policy.

The global crisis is a crisis of capitalism

It is time for the workers and the poor in the Philippines to prepare for the worse the moment its government keeps on repeating the mantra that the economic fundamentals remain good and thus there is little to worry about effects of the global recessionary trend. The world found itself in the present mess precisely because of such blind faith in neoliberal fundamentalism.

The shallow basis for such declarations from the government is supposedly the fact that most of Philippine exports are being sent to China rather than the US. But China is just a transit point or a gigantic department in the assembly line that spans the globe. Thus exports to China will simply be assembled there and then ultimately sent to the US, Japan or Europe as finished products. Such is the international division of labor under the era of globalization.

Relegating the world’s future to the hands of same leaders who created the current global economic crisis is a recipe to further disaster, according to Partido ng Manggagawa (Workers Party), a militant labor party in the Philippines which joined hundreds of other protesters in a march to the US embassy this morning in time for the G20 Summit in Washington DC.

Sharp drop in migrants’ money transfers from US

Mexico depends on migrants' remittances for eight percent of its Gross Domestic Product compared to 12 percent in Guatemala and no less than 18 percent of El Salvador's GDP. And these are the official statistics, which do not include US dollars passing the US border under car mats.

The US credit crisis is also claiming victims far away from home. Latin American migrants in the US are sending far less money home than expected. The migrants and their families in their countries of origin are the victims of a faltering US economy. The double threat of job insecurity and inflation means that poverty is now a serious risk.

Why Eating GM Food Could Lower Your Fertility

by Sean Poulter

Genetically modified corn has been linked to a threat to fertility in an
official study that could deliver a hammer blow to controversial 'Frankenstein
Food'.

Most of the research on GM crop safety has been conducted by
biotech companies, such as Monsanto, rather than outside independent
laboratories. A long-term feeding trial commissioned by the Austrian
government found mice fed on GM corn or maize had fewer offspring and lower
birth rates.
