The 1Sky Campaign is holding a national Day of Action to carry the momentum from this year's election into the Capitol and White House. On Tuesday, November 18th, volunteers will gather all over the country-with help from 1Sky, the Energy Action Coalition and 350.org--to welcome the President-elect and the new Congress by calling on them to make climate an immediate priority in 2009.

This post, however, offers our perspective on the current moment, examining the implications of Obama's election and what it bodes for those of us working for peace, sustainability and social justice. We hope you will take a few minutes to read it through and consider our our perspective. We, of course, invite and welcome your feedback. Note that we have not tried to be comprehensive in addressing the issues that will need to be addressed in the months ahead. Rather, we have attempted to put together a framework for understanding our current situation and used a few examples to illustrate our situation.

First, Iraq, which Greenspan admitted was a war for oil. And then, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran. And so, more oil for Exxon Mobil, Halliburton and other contributors to the Republican war chest.

The vast disparity between justice for the rich and poor in a capitalist society and the impunity of the rich for their crimes.
In a capitalist society, the magnitude of the crime and who perpetrates it is crucial to an understanding of the punishment. If a large capitalist or "entrepreneur," as they like to be called, commits a robbery on the scale of the savings and loan heist or the recent robbery of people thinking they could actually have a roof over their head, the punishment for these blatant robber barons is a reward by the government of even more money. Hundreds of billions, as a matter of fact.

Military Mobilization? DRAFT? Obama–YES; McCain–Yes; Rep. Rangel (D-NY)–Yes!
The country is now preparing to elect a new President and as all our citizens consider their choices, they are confronted with the numbing denial by both Obama and McCain that the Iraq war is Illegal. “Why are Obama and McCain discussing the terrifying idea of a draft” Americans are asking, when “it is your sworn constitutional duty to call for an end to this and future Illegal Wars,” and then, a draft is clearly un-necessary?
Rep. Rangel (D-NY) has been on record for a draft since November 2006:
“"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said.” See note 1

Munich Agreement papers declassified
The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR in Russian abbreviation) has declassified archive materials related to the 1938 Munich Agreement, which triggered the most dramatic events of the 20th century.

Head of the SVR press office Sergei Ivanov granted us permission to view the declassified documents, saying: "The declassified intelligence documents reflect the political processes which took place before and after the Munich Agreement of September 30, 1938, which is also called the ‘Munich conspiracy.'"
